You should attend as many magic conventions as you can, particularly the Nationals. These conventions consist of lectures; competitions and you can watch professionals perform. If you are serious about learning magic, your goal should be to develop a close up or stage act and compete in these competitions. You will learn many things by the contacts and friendships that you make at conventions. As you grow, you may want to be selective about who you share your ideas with, but in the beginning, there is no better way to learn than to open your self up to everyone at club meetings, and conventions. Make friends, share ideas, and watch each other rehearse. When you watch other magicians perform, forget about HOW they did it, and ask yourself - how did they make me FEEL?

Find the type of magic that you like. What really interests you? Concentrate on this one particular type of magic. Once you start to develop an act, try to incorporate one unique object and build upon it. Take for example: a rose, champagne bottle, light bulb, lantern, a mask etc. Strive to be unique. Look for ideas everywhere. You may get a really cool, original idea by reading history or watching a futuristic movie.

Before you ever perform in front of an audience, you must practice…practice…practice and when you are finished, practice some more. When you rehearse, a video camera of a mirror will be your best friend. Do as many shows as you can, no matter the size, or how much they pay. Your audience will teach you everything! Pay attention to their reactions and ask yourself what's working? What's not…. And what needs improvement? Never be closed minded to any suggestion or opinion of another magician or audience member. Nine out of ten times, their idea may sound crazy, but just smile and listen because if you close your mind, you might just miss out on that one great idea. When you stop growing you magic begins to die.

Check out my web page on "inspiration". Find out what you can about these people. If they influenced me, they just might influence you. Check out my shopping list. See if anything interests you. You may want to write and ask for a catalog or list of effects. Remember…
